At the Met: Meet the Mozarts -- Father and Son

Oct 25, 2005

For Immediate Release

Contact: Annie Matlow 326-3136 ext. 30

SPOKANE: The Spokane Symphony and Music Director Eckart Preu introduce the Mozarts -- both father and son Oct. 30 at 3 p.m. and Nov. 1 at 7:30 p.m. at the Metropolitan Performing Arts Center with guest artist, bassoonist Lynne Feller-Marshall. The Spokane Symphony musicians will leave their tuxes at home and join Maestro Preu to make the music come alive in a casual atmosphere.

Feller-Marshall is the principal bassoonist with the Spokane Symphony and teaches bassoon at Eastern Washington University and Whitworth College. She is dedicating her performance to the memory of her father, David Feller.

There is an apparent musical differentiation between Leopold and Wolfgang Mozart's music. Leopold wrote to purely entertain and make his audience laugh, while Wolfgang did not consciously cater to the taste of the people. While intimated by his father, Wolfgang always sought the approval of his father, who taught him everything he knew.

Listeners will hear Leopold's Hunting Symphony in G Major and Peasant Wedding in D Major. Wolfgang's Concerto in B-flat Major for Bassoon and Symphony No.35 known as Haffner will show the other side of the Mozart family's musical talent.

The four-piece program will have people shouting, cannon noises, whistling and a bagpipe. This concert will have exciting effects to help the music come alive and leave you on your seats wanting more. While the Mozarts wrote for same occasions, listen for the difference in the character of the music.

This concert is underwritten by Mary Schultz and F&M Bank.
