Symphony’s Lincoln Festival continues with two education events

Feb 23, 2009

For Immediate Release

Contact: Annie Matlow 464-7071

SPOKANE-- In the week leading up to the world premiere performance of Letters from Lincoln on Feb. 28 and March 1, area students will take part in two unique Lincoln Festival educational activities presented by the Welty Family Learning Center at the Martin Woldson Theater at The Fox as part of the Spokane Symphony’s Lincoln Festival.

On Wednesday, Feb. 25 at 3:30 p.m., composer Michael Daugherty will hold a master class for composition students using Internet2, the cutting edge high-speed communication technology. Daugherty will work with a composition student from Gonzaga University on the stage at Martin Woldson Theater at The Fox and with two composition students at the University of Montana in Missoula. Each one will have their composition performed as part of the class. The master class is open to other composition students and to the public. The real time communication through Internet2 provides these students with the unique experience of working on their compositions with a world class composer.

This program is funded Inland Northwest Community Foundation, Wells Fargo Bank, Washington State Art Commission and National Endowment for the Arts.

On Thursday, Feb. 26, at 10 a.m., 500 students will attend a symposium on Lincoln at Martin Woldson Theater at The Fox, organized as part of the Lincoln Festival as a partnership between Eastern Washington University and West Valley School.

The presentation by Drs. Harvey Alvy and Richard Donley of EWU is entitled “Abraham Lincoln: The President Who Saved the Nation.” The presentation will include:

  • The Civil War: America’s Greatest Tragedy

  • The United States: A Nation Tied Together Through Ideas: The Gettysburg Address

  •  Lincoln As a 19th Century Man

  • Lincoln as a Lifelong Learner (will include a major section related to President Obama)

  • Hope and Inspiration:  Lincoln’s Second Inaugural Speech

  • Do we really know President Lincoln?

The program is funded by Inland Northwest Community Foundation.

For more information about either of these programs, contact Spokane Symphony Education Manager Janet Napoles at 509-464-7062.
